Thousands rally in Caracas to support Maduro during US court arraignment
Participants in downtown Caracas joined the “Great March for Venezuela,” condemning the U.S. military intervention and what they described as the abduction of their president.
Demonstrators carried banners and chanted slogans including “We want him back,” “Return our working-class president,” “Sovereignty is not negotiable,” and “We will always be loyal to Maduro.”
Support rallies in support of Maduro were also reported outside Venezuela, including in Cuba, Colombia, and several European countries such as Spain. Conversely, Venezuelan opposition figures and right-wing groups held demonstrations endorsing the U.S. operation.
The U.S. action, announced by President Donald Trump and executed on January 3, 2026, involved airstrikes and a special forces raid that led to Maduro and his wife being flown to the United States to face federal charges, including narco-terrorism and conspiracy to traffic drugs.
In Venezuela’s disputed July 2024 presidential election, the National Electoral Council declared Maduro the winner with roughly 51% of the vote, though the outcome was questioned internationally and by the U.S.
Venezuela’s Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez and interim leader Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, appointed acting president by the Supreme Court after Maduro’s capture, strongly condemned the U.S. operation. Rodriguez has recently advocated for dialogue with Washington, emphasizing Venezuela’s right to peace, development, and sovereignty, and calling for international cooperation on shared development.
On Monday, Maduro appeared in federal court in Manhattan for his initial arraignment on the longstanding charges.
